Yo-Yo Iron for Yellowtail Is a Retrieve-Speed Problem, Not a Reel-Size Problem

Why gear ratio and retrieve rate, not reel size or line capacity, actually separate a good yo-yo iron setup from a bottom-fishing outfit.

Someone posted a gear question that comes up constantly among anglers new to a specific reel. He’d picked up a discontinued Daiwa Saltist 30, backed it with 65lb braid, and wanted to know what it was actually good for. Yo-yo reel? Bottom reel? “I have no clue,” he admitted. The one reply recommended a rod brand within his price range and stopped there.

That question doesn’t hinge on reel size the way the thread’s framing assumed.

Yo-yo iron fishing is defined by retrieve speed: working a jig on a fast, continuous vertical retrieve to trigger a reaction strike from suspended or schooling yellowtail, rather than presenting bait and waiting. Gear ratio and retrieve rate per handle turn matter more to whether a reel suits that technique than its size class or line capacity ever will. Established setups bear this out. One widely cited yo-yo iron writeup pairs a Penn Torque 30 star drag, a 6.0:1 gear ratio moving 30 inches of line per crank, spooled with 80lb Spectra on a heavy seven-foot rod. Another common combination runs an Okuma Tesoro 12S, 6.2:1 and a notably faster 46 inches per crank, on a seven-foot heavy or extra-heavy rod at 65lb. Both center on a fast-retrieve conventional reel matched to a stout rod built for a hard, continuous lift-stroke.

That comparison actually answers the original question directly rather than leaving it open. A Saltist 30 star drag runs a 6.4:1 gear ratio at roughly 39.5 inches of line per crank, which sits right between the Torque 30 and the Tesoro 12S, faster than one established yo-yo setup and slightly slower than the other. On retrieve rate alone, it belongs solidly in yo-yo iron territory rather than dead-sticking bottom gear. What actually decides whether it performs that role well is the rod pairing: a rod built for a quick, aggressive lift-stroke jigging cadence suits yo-yo iron, while a softer rod meant for dead-sticking live bait on the bottom won’t transmit that same aggressive jig action no matter how fast the reel underneath it retrieves.

Line capacity and drag are worth a second look once the retrieve question is settled, since they matter differently for yo-yo iron than for bottom fishing even on the same reel. A 30-size reel spooled with 65lb braid carries enough capacity for a yellowtail’s initial run without getting spooled, and yo-yo technique itself doesn’t demand the same drag range a bait rod does, since the strike happens on a fast retrieve rather than a slow-fed bait take, and the fight that follows is short, hard, and close to the boat rather than a long, sustained pull. A reel already sized and spooled for bottom work, in other words, rarely needs anything changed mechanically to cross over into yo-yo iron duty.
