Understanding why mesh abrasion matters this much requires knowing what it’s actually stripping away. Fish produce a mucus layer, generated continuously by goblet cells in the skin, that acts as a physical barrier against bacteria, fungi, and parasites and even carries antimicrobial compounds that actively kill pathogens on contact — on top of helping the fish regulate hydration against the surrounding water. Scraping that layer off against knotted or abrasive mesh doesn’t just look rough. Species variation is real, and the case for rubber mesh isn’t identical across every fish that goes over the gunwale.
Worth checking before you buy: “rubber-coated” isn’t always what it sounds like. The same research distinguishes true rubber mesh from rubber-coated nylon (nylon fabric dipped in latex) and found the coated version showed scale-loss signals comparable to the worst treatments in the whole test, not the gentle handling its name implies. Reading the actual material spec, not just the word “rubber” on the packaging, matters more than it should.
Hoop size does matter, but matching it to your realistic typical target species rather than maximizing size for its own sake produces a more usable net. An oversized net is genuinely cumbersome to maneuver in tight boat spaces or from a kayak, while an undersized net for your typical catch risks a fish simply not fitting, turning netting into a frustrating, fish-stressing struggle.
